The Unity Project

The Unity Project for the Relief of Homelessness in London has provided emergency shelter beds and transitional housing in a renovated older property in Old East Village since 2003.

The Unity Project fills a unique niche by offering a small scale, family-like atmosphere suitable for couples or individuals. Residential services are supported by life-skills training, peer support, assistance with seeking, obtaining and maintaining employment and mental health referrals.

The Unity Project:

Increases residents’ knowledge of their individual strengths;
Focuses their work ethics on developing goals;
Encourages personal growth;
Supports their endeavours; and
Helps guide them towards permanent solutions of their dilemmas and problems. The Unity Project’s General Manager, Charlene “Chuck” Lazenby continues to provide dynamic leadership since the origin in the Tent City of 2001, (“Community Spotlight: Tent City turned Social Agency in London Ontario” published by Raising the Roof.)

LSTAR member Rick Odegaard, a long time advocate for affordable housing and permanent shelters, helped launch the Unity Project and was honoured by the Mayor in her 2004 Honours List for those efforts.
